Sleep Disorder Testing Sleep Care CenterServices

A night in the sleep lab is necessary for evaluation of physical facts affecting sleep commonly found in Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), Periodic Limb Movements in Sleep (PLMS) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). A sleep study or polysomnogram (PSG) is noninvasive and painless.

During your study, there will be several dime sized sensors attached to your scalp, face, chest, abdomen and legs. The sensors are monitoring brain activity, eye movements, muscle movements, breathing and heart activity.

You will be provided a private room with a queen size bed, private bath and TV. In most instances, you will be ready to leave the Sleep Center by 6:00 am the following morning.

Before Your PSG

  • Do not take any naps the day of the study.
  • Refrain from caffeine after 5pm.
  • Avoid stimulants, alcohol and sedatives.
  • Please bathe and shampoo your hair. Do not use hairspray, styling gel or other hair products. Please do not wear make-up or nail polish. Refrain from using skin lotions and powders.
  • Take your usual prescribed medication unless otherwise instructed by your physician. Medications are not available at the Sleep Center.
  • Please bring a list of you medications.
  • Eat your evening meal prior to coming to the Sleep Center.
  • Smoking is not permitted in the hospital. You will have access to a smoking area outside of the hospital.
  • One person may come to the Sleep Center with you but must leave prior to bedtime. If the patient being studied requires a caregiver, the caregiver may stay the night. Prior notice must be given to the staff to insure beds are available.
  • Bring appropriate sleepwear such as a T-shirt and shorts or pajamas. Do not wear sleep wear made of silky materials - they can cause static which affect the testing equipment. Patients are not allowed to sleep in their underwear or in the nude out of respect for the technologist.
